Isaiah Scroll and Dead Sea Scroll jar facsimile |
Date |
facsimile, 3rd cent B.C.- 1st cent. A.D. |
Notes |
About A.D. 68, Jews fleeing an advancing Roman army hid scrolls in jars like this and placed them in remote caves near the Dead Sea. Eleven caves have yielded manuscripts--some fragmentary, some relatively intact-of between 600 and 800 books written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. Among the Dead Sea Scrolls are biblical (Old Testament) and sectarian texts, some previously unknown. Some of the biblical manuscripts are 1,000 years older than previously known manuscripts of the Old Testament. They have enhanced our knowledge of the Old Testament, second temple Judaism and early Christianity. |
