These two pages give the context for the illumnination, allowing you to enjoy word and the image. Each page of "The Saint John's Bible" is an artistic creation. In addition to the illumination and handwritte text, the Gospel Opening offers many other elements that create a visual harmony for all to behold. These include chapter numbers, chapter letters, marginalia, notations, books headings and verse numbers. In this illumination of the Nativity, gold leaf is used to represnet the presence and power of the Divine. The animal in the forefront is not a mild barn cow, but rather a bull that resembles those found in the caves at lascaux. The Saint John's Bble was commissioned by Saint John's Univeresity in Collegeville, Minnesota, from the contemporarytscribe and illuminator, Donald Jackson. Mr. Jacskon worked in the Scriptorium in Wales, whee he handwrites the Bible and creates illumninations in a unique collaboration with otehr artists and scribes. |
