|Title||I Fell in Love with Jesus|
|Author||McKinney, Baylus Benjamin|
“I Fell in Love with Jesus” is an unpublished hymn by Baptist song writer and evangelistic singer Baylus Benjaimn McKinney. In 1950, at a Paisano Encampment in west Texas, Dr. Kyle Yates of Houston’s Second Baptist Church was preaching and said the apostle John “fell in love with Jesus.” When McKinney heard that phrase, he told William Turner, sitting next to him, “There’s a hymn there.” Later he wrote out the words and music to “I Fell in Love with Jesus” and gave it to Turner, a pastor in west Texas.
The hymn by McKinney and its story written by Turner were given to Houston Baptist University, though there is no record of who the donor was. Rhonda Furr discovered this when cleaning out the music offices in the summer of 2015.
B.B. McKinney (1886-1952) wrote the words and music for over 149 gospel hymns and songs (the discovery of “I Fell in Love with Jesus” brings the number to at least 150!), including “The Nail Scarred Hand,” ‘Wherever He Leads I’ll Go,” “Breathe on Me,” and “Let Others See Jesus in You.”
